Paraffin Wax
What is Paraffin Wax?
Paraffin wax is a soft, white or colorless solid obtained through the de-waxing process of slack wax. It is typically categorized based on its oil content, which can range from 0.5% to a maximum of 20%. There are primarily two types: fully-refined and semi-refined. Paraffin wax has a melting point typically ranging between 46 and 68 °C, with a density of approximately 900 kg/m3. While insoluble in water, it readily dissolves in ether, benzene, and certain esters. Paraffin is resistant to most common chemical reagents but combusts easily, with a heat of combustion measuring 42 kJ/g. Its excellent protective and water-repellent properties make it well-suited for coating cardboard and paper, particularly in the food industry. Additionally, its ability to blend with various wax-based products renders it indispensable in the manufacturing of polishes, cosmetics, and candles. Paraffin wax emulsion is commonly utilized as a construction chemical to safeguard concrete against corrosion.
